THE AIR HUNG THICK with summer heat and the flame of men’s words. Matthew Cotton, the blasted man, even in death was causing him problems.

Walter stared at the soil in an effort to keep his face expressionless.

He’d been accused already of letting the rope slack. He’d denied it, of course. “Why would I? There’s no profit for me in it.”

But Stanley’s face had said there was, and now, they were banding together against him.

“I heard he was having a hard time, and since he’s gone, it leaves only his hired hand to tend the place. I have time. I can spend a few days there,” said one man.

“Me as well,” said another. “The widow needn’t have to worry over her provision.”

The widow. Matthew Cotton’s pretty, little wife who’d been hauled off in their wagon at the side of the new, legal owner. An owner her age. Young, strong, single. Someone who might have fewer qualms about using the water. Then again, he was dedicated to Matthew. He’d seen that in person.

What exactly was he up against? Could he reopen the trenches right under Jacob’s nose? Or would it be best to wait a spell, until the uproar died down and then strike a new deal.

Waiting was risky because his trees were desperate for water, and each day that passed meant they dried up further. Jacob Flynn might not want to make a deal, given the animosity between he and Matthew Cotton.

Forty-eight hours, he’d give it that long before making any move. There was the funeral to consider first. In this heat, they’d perform it quickly, and he’d need to be there. Otherwise, he’d look cold and uncaring, and appearances were important.

No one ... no one could find out what he’d done, nor could he let this opportunity slip through his fingers. He needed that water, and he hadn’t come this far, gone to these lengths, to watch the prospect slip away.
